SAN FRANCISCO -- A short, sharp earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area early Monday, breaking plates and cracking plaster without prompting reports of injuries or major damage.
The magnitude-4.0 quake struck at 6:49 a.m. and was centered just north of Piedmont, near Berkeley, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was felt in downtown San Francisco, along the peninsula and in the East Bay.
"This was a fairly small one but we should be prepared for them at all times," USGS spokeswoman Leslie Gordon said
The shallow quake produced a sharp jolt followed by gentle rolls. People on social media reported broken clocks and plates.
"Everyone's outside to see if their homes were damaged," Sean Lydon told the San Francisco Chronicle after running out of his home following the shaking.
Hrsha Khaurula and Umang Barot are students at Northeastern University in San Jose. They are originally from India and said they had never experienced an earthquake before.
"I did not know how to react to it," Khurula said. "The only thing I could do is run because everyone started evacuating the building and the security guard said, hey you gotta move."
"Yes, it was my first experience," Barot said. "I do not want to experience it again."
No damage or injuries have been reported. Still, it was the largest earthquake in the Bay Area since a 6.0-magnitude earthquake was centered in Napa County in 2014.
At 11:47 a.m. USGS recorded a 3.1 magnitude aftershock. An even larger, 3.6 magnitude, aftershock hit Seven Trees at 3:08 p.m. according to USGS. A third 2.9 magnitude aftershock was recorded just after 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
